GS030112   Current Methods in Molecular Research II

Putkey, John; and Carpenter, Phillip. Two semester hours. Spring annually. Prerequisite: consent of instructor

This course provides an introduction to current methods for the study of biomolecules, including proteins and nucleic acids. Lectures focus on the theory, instrumentation, practical applications with specific examples, and the advantages, disadvantages and limitations of each method. Methods used primarily for the study of proteins will be presented and will include optical methods, hydrodynamics, various chromatographic techniques, methods used in equilibrium and kinetic studies, radioisotopic methods, nuclear magnetic resonance, mass spectrometry and methods used to determine protein primary and secondary structure.
