The Sowell-Huggins Professorship and Graduate Fellowship
in Cancer Research
APPLICATION INSTRUCTIONS
Common Application Cover Sheet
- to be completed by the student and faculty member
Materials to be provided by the student:
- A current Curriculum Vita
- A description of the student's research project including
a brief background, rationale for the study, importance of the work
to the area of cancer research, and a clearly stated hypothesis and
research plan (2 pages maximum), followed by the results obtained to
date, the significance of the findings, conclusions drawn, and future
research plans (3 pages maximum)
- A brief abstract (1 page maximum) summarizing in "lay
terms" the points in 3) above and emphasizing the relevance of the work
to cancer.
- Two Letters of recommendation: one from the student's
supervisory professor and one from an additional GSBS faculty member
who is familiar with the student's research. Both of these letters should
address the quality of the student's research performance, its relevance
to cancer, the student's potential for a career in cancer research,
and the student's ability to communicate his or her work to the scientific
and lay communities.
- Reprints of any publications or abstracts published or
submitted, or other supporting materials that the applicant wishes to
submit
- A personal statement outlining the student's career goals
(one page maximum).
(Please note that item #6 is unique for the Sowell Huggins
Fellowship. Items 1-5 are identical with the application for the Sowell
Huggins Scholarship. The student who is applying for both the fellowship
and the scholarship need only to submit one copy of items 1-5 plus the
personal statement (item #6) with both completed application coversheets.)
Materials to be provided by the faculty member:
- A complete CV identifying publications, history of professional
appointments, current and past extramural funding (including dates and
amounts of awards), honors, awards, and significant professional service
and appointments;
- A summary (two pages or less) of the faculty member's
contributions to the field of cancer research;
- Letters of recommendation from two GSBS faculty members
describing the contributions of the faculty applicant to cancer research
and to the GSBS, and letters from two GSBS alumni describing the faculty
member's contributions to their graduate training and subsequent careers;
- A list of all GSBS activities, including students supervised.
(Note: faculty wishing to submit applications should contact Ms. Brenda Gaughan by phone 713-500-9857 or by e-mail Brenda.Gaughan@uth.tmc.edu,
at least one week prior to the application deadline. Ms. Gaughan
will provide a list of all GSBS activities to the applicant, who may
then submit the information as part of their application.); and
- A personal statement (two pages or less) outlining the
faculty member's future goals in both cancer research and graduate education
at GSBS.
Applications will be reviewed by a committee of senior
GSBS faculty and administrators appointed by the Dean. To be eligible
for review, the entire application and material must be received before
5 p.m. of the designated deadline.
