TIMELINES FOR DEGREE PROGRAMS

[Ph.D. Degree]  [M.S. Degree]  [Genetic Counseling M.S. Degree]  [M.D./Ph.D. Degree]


Ph.D. DEGREE

FIRST YEAR

  • Take care of: Entrance Deficiencies / Area Requirements / Tutorial Requirements
  • Choose Advisor and Advisory Committee
  • Have first Advisory Committee meeting
  • Decide on Program affiliation (optional)


SECOND YEAR

  • Complete courses recommended by Advisory Committee
  • Continue research project
  • Meet with Advisory Committee at least every six months
  • Petition for candidacy to M.S. degree [see M.S. Time Line, below],
    OR
  • Prepare research proposal for Ph.D. candidacy exam; obtain approval from Advisory Committee to petition for Ph.D. candidacy
  • Choose Examining Committee

THIRD YEAR

  • Take candidacy examination
  • After approved fror Ph.D. Candidacy, enroll in Dissertation (GS000920)
  • Choose Supervisory Committee


FOURTH YEAR AND BEYOND (MAXIMUM SEVEN YEARS)

  • Meet with Supervisory Committee at least every six months
  • Complete research
  • Write dissertation
  • Defend dissertation work


M.S. DEGREE

FIRST YEAR

  • Choose Advisor and Advisory Committee
  • Have first committee meeting
  • Enroll in courses and Research in Biomedical Science (GS000520)


SECOND YEAR

  • Complete courses recommended by Advisory Committee
  • Meet with Advisory Committee at least every six months
  • Continue research project
  • By end of year, petition for candidacy to M.S. degree and choose Supervisory Committee
  • After approved for M.S. candidacy, enroll in Thesis for M.S.


THIRD YEAR

  • Meet with Supervisory Committee at least every six months
  • Complete research project
  • Write and defend thesis


GENETIC COUNSELING M.S. DEGREE

FIRST YEAR

    Fall
    Enroll in Program courses
    Meet with Advisory Committee [designated by Program]
    Spring
    Enroll in courses and Research in Biomedical Science (GS000520)
    Choose Advisor
    Have first Committee meeting
    Summer
    Complete courses recommended by Advisory Committee
    Meet with Advisory Committee: Petition for M.S. candidacy


SECOND YEAR

    Fall
    After approved for M.S. candidacy, enroll in Thesis for M.S. (GS000910)
    Meet with Supervisory Committee
    Spring
    Complete research project
    Meet with Supervisory Committee: Petition for M.S. defense
    Write and defend thesis

M.D./Ph.D. DEGREE

  Requirements Deadline
1 Complete 3 tutorial lab rotations After 2 terms of registration in GSBS (usually summers)
2 Select Advisor After 2 years of registration in M.D./Ph.D. Program
3 Select Advisory Committee Within 6 months of moving from M.D. to Ph.D. part of Program
4 Committee meetings Every 6 months
5 Repair admission deficiencies After 1st full academic year of registration in GSBS
6 Complete GSBS ethics course After 1st full academic year of registration in GSBS
7 Satisfy quantitative area requirement After 1st full academic year of registration in GSBS
8 Bypass M.S. degree After passing candidacy exam, if admitted in 1999 or after
9 Petition for Ph.D. candidacy After 2nd full academic year of registration in GSBS
10 Written portion of Ph.D. candidacy examination Successful completion of Step 1 of USMLE
11 Ph.D. oral candidacy exam Within 3 months after petition for Ph.D. candidacy is approved by Academic Standards Committee
12 Select Supervisory Committee Within 3 months of the date of conditional or unconditional pass of the candidacy exam
13 Petition for defense of Ph.D. dissertation* Within 3 years of advancement to Ph.D. candidacy
14 Defend and submit Ph.D. dissertation Within 3 months of approval of petition for defense

*M.D./Ph.D. students who have not met all requirements for the Ph.D. within six years of entering the laboratory phase of the Program may continue registration in GSBS only with the express written permission of the Dean.
