ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS AND PROCEDURES

Deadlines

  • Fall Term -- December 15 (for competitive stipend); May 1 (final deadline)
  • Spring Term -- November 1
  • Summer Term -- March 1
  • International Applications -- December 15

Academic Preparation and Prerequisites [top]

Applicants for the Ph.D. Degree Program

Applicants must have a bachelor's degree or its equivalent from an accredited institution, and a background in the basic sciences which includes:

  • Biology -- a minimum of one year (preferably including a course in introductory biology)
  • Biochemistry -- a minimum of one semester (with prerequisite organic chemistry)
  • Calculus -- a minimum of one semester
  • Physics -- a minimum of one year

Undergraduate preparation that includes rigorous upper-level science courses or courses utilizing calculus is preferred.

Applicants are expected to have a grade point average of 3.0 on a scale of 4.0 on all undergraduate and graduate level work taken previously (particularly in the prerequisites listed above).

Applicants are required to take the General Test of the Graduate Record Examinations. A Subject Test is not required.

A student who is initially admitted to the GSBS M.S. degree program may not submit an application to the Ph.D. degree program prior to the completion of most or all of the research required for the M.S.
Applicants may submit only one application per year for a particular program. If an application is rejected, the applicant may re-apply to that program for consideration by the Admissions Committee after waiting one year. The applicant is expected to complete a new application for admission and supply any additional materials to update the application.

Applicants for the M.S. Degree Program

Applicants for the M.S. degree programs will be evaluated for academic qualification as evidenced by academic record, letters of recommendation, and the results of the Graduate Record Examinations. Applicants will be expected to state clearly their educational objectives, area of interest and professional goals and indicate how these may be met in the GSBS.

Required Application Materials [top]

A formal application includes the following:

  • A completed application form and payment of a $10 non-refundable application fee.
  • A letter from the applicant stating educational and research background, objectives in seeking advanced education, professional goals, the field(s) of study of greatest interest, and reasons for seeking admission at the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences in Houston.
  • Three letters of recommendation from persons qualified to evaluate the applicant's past scholastic performance, scholastic ability, research interest and motivation, and personal attributes such as character and personality. If the applicant is currently enrolled in or has completed a graduate program, one of these letters must be from the applicant's academic advisor or mentor.
  • One complete certified transcript from each institution of higher (i.e., post-secondary) education attended; the transcript should show a record of all academic work completed and must be submitted by the college or university directly to the Office of the Registrar.
  • Results of the Graduate Record Examinations General Test (the Subject Test is not required). Scores from the Graduate Record Examinations must be sent directly from the Educational Testing Service to the Office of the Registrar.
  • Personal interviews may be arranged at the discretion of the Admissions Committee.
The Admissions Committee may commence its consideration of applicants who have provided unofficial copies of transcripts and GRE scores, but final acceptance requires receipt of official documents.
  • GSBS is committed to providing a comfortable and safe environment for our students, whether they are attending classes or performing research in the labs of our faculty members. To help ensure this goal, GSBS and our parent institutions have required a background check of all faculty and employees. Beginning Fall 2007, students will be included in this process. Prior to matriculation, all students will be required to provide a criminal background check.
