Travel Awards Available for Oustanding Undergraduate Students -- Due November 15, 2009
The 3rd Annual Cullen Trust for Higher Education Symposium on Translational Research will be held on January 15, 2010 in the Texas Medical Center, Houston, TX. This Symposium will highlight the outstanding translational research at The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston, M. D. Anderson Cancer Center and Baylor College of Medicine and is open to all interested parties. In conjunction with the Symposium, an MD/PhD Career Development Workshop will be held the following day, Saturday, January 16, 2010, for current and prospective MD/PhD students.
The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston, M.D. Anderson Cancer Center and Baylor College of Medicine are located in the Texas Medical Center (TMC) in close proximity to each other and to Rice University. The scientific and clinical resources of the TMC, which is the largest medical center in the world with over 60,000 patients seen daily, provide unparalleled opportunities for translational research.

Applications for Cullen Trust for Higher Education Fellowship Travel Awards
2009 Travel Award Recipients
To apply for a Cullen Trust for Higher Education Travel Award to attend the Symposium and Workshop, please submit the following to Patricia.Cruz@uth.tmc.edu no later than November 15, 2009. Please use the subject line, “Application for Cullen Fellowship Travel Award _______ (insert your name)” in your email. Travel grants will provide domestic flights or ground transportation, one or two nights lodging, and a meal allowance. To apply for a travel grant you must currently be enrolled as a junior in good academic standing at an accredited U.S. college or university with an overall undergraduate GPA of 3.25 or higher (on a 4-point scale).
(1) A CV (two pages maximum) that includes the following information:
Name, mailing address, email address, and phone
Colleges/universities and dates attended
Major and any minor fields of study
Overall undergraduate GPA
List of any undergraduate honors and achievements
Brief description of undergraduate research projects and citations of any related publications, abstracts, and scientific presentations(2) A brief statement (300 words or less) describing your interest in attending the Symposium and Workshop.
(3) A letter of recommendation from a faculty member familiar with your potential for doctoral research studies. It is highly recommended that the letter be from a faculty member who has supervised your undergraduate research project(s). The faculty member should submit his/her recommendation describing your potential for a career as an MD/PhD physician-scientist by email to Patricia.Cruz@uth.tmc.edu and indicate “Recommendation for _______ (insert your name)” in the subject line.
Recommendations should be received no later than November 15, 2009.
Recipients of travel awards will be notified shortly after the application deadline.

VIA U.S. HIGHWAY 59
Follow U.S. 59 South past the downtown area and then, just after it turns to the west, take the Fannin exit. Go south (left) on Fannin about a mile to the Texas Medical Center. Once you reach the Medical Center, turn left (east) on John Freeman Blvd. (watch out for the train). Take the first right on Bertner Ave. and follow it past Moursund St. (stop sign) to the McGovern Commons garage, where you can park on floors 2-6. The Basic Sciences Research (Mitchell) Building is next to the Commons on Bertner Ave.
VIA INTERSTATE HIGHWAY 45
Follow I-45 South past the downtown area to U.S. 59. Take 59 to the Southwest (toward Victoria). Right after the 288 exit, take the Fannin exit. Go south (left) on Fannin and follow the directions above to the Basic Science Research (Mitchell) Building.From West of Houston

Take U.S. 59 to the West Loop (I-610). Take the exit to the south (right) and follow 610 to the Bellaire exit. At Bellaire take a left and head under the loop (East) toward the Medical Center. Take Bellaire about three miles (and a bunch of lights) to the Medical Center where it mysteriously becomes Holcombe. Go past Main St. and Fannin St. and turn left on Bertner Ave. After about a block and a half, Bertner Ave. angles to the right, and as it does you will see the McGovern Commons garage, where you can park on floors 2-6. Take either highway to the West Loop (I-610). Take the exit to the south (right) and follow 610 (past the Galleria and past U.S. 59) to the Bellaire exit. VIA STATE HIGHWAY 288
Take 288 past the South Loop (I-610) and exit at MacGregor. Cross S. MacGregor and take a left at N. MacGregor. Follow N. MacGregor across Almeda, through Hermann Park by the golf course (where MacGregor becomes S. Braeswood) to the major intersection at Holcombe. Turn west (right) on Holcombe. At the second traffic light (Bertner Ave.) take a right. After about a block and a half, Bertner Ave. angles to the right, and as it does you will see the McGovern Commons garage, where you can park on floors 2-6. Take I-10 or 225 west to the East Loop (I-610). Take the exit to the south and follow 610 as it becomes the South Loop and passes under I-45. From that point go 5 miles to the 288 exit. Take the downtown exit and follow 288 North to the MacGregor exit and follow the State Highway 288 directions above to the Basic Sciences Research (Mitchell) Building.
