Research Interests: Molecular biology; apoptosis; hematopoietic stem cells; acute and chronic leukemias; gene therapy; immunology

New and established clinical research programs I am involved with include the development of cytokine-chemotherapy combinations; the development of MDR-blocking strategies; in the laboratory and clinical trials with MDR-1 modulators and MDR-1 independent anthracycline; the study of cell proliferation in vivo with iododeoxyuridine and bromodeoxyuridine; a comprehensive analysis of pathways of cell proliferation and apoptosis in AML patients during and after induction chemotherapy; and the development of strategies to modulate apoptotic pathways in leukemias utilizing gene therapy, anti-sense oligonucleotides and retinoids. In addition, molecular cytogenetic studies identified new genomic abnormalities in leukemias and lymphomas. Gene transfer technology has been used to correct genetic defects in leukemic cells and to eradicate breast cancer cells.
