Research Interests: Respiratory correlated imaging (4DCT); 4D treatment planning for radiation therapy; image guided radiation therapy
My current research involves radiation therapy for lung cancer. Lung cancer is a particularly challenging area for radiotherapy as tumors move significantly with respiration. The challenge of treating these moving tumors is increased by the radio-sensitivity of the lung. We are developing methods to image these moving tumors and developing strategies to treat them either while moving or during breath-hold treatments. We are also developing methods to determine the overall dose distributions to the lungs when respiratory motion is factored into the planning process.
A student working in this environment will become familiar with radiographic imaging and radiation therapy treatment planning systems.
